You're a teenager, and you're struggling. Your parents, maybe even your teachers or your guidence counselor all thing that you're out of control. You're bad, or you're "at risk." But it doesn't feel that way to you. You're scared, and you're alone, and you're confused and fighting to find just one person who understands you. One person who cares about you. One person who can help you to get through the crisis that is your life. Your parents and teachers aren't helping you, and you're starting to think that nobody can. Where do you go?
The United States and Canada are sprinkled with schools that are designed specifically to help teenagers just like you. They're called Wilderness Schools and they are meant to help you to build confidence in yourself while learning teamwork and having an opportunity to talk to others who have been there, done that, and who want to extend to you their understanding.
Mt. Horizon is one such school, located in Washington State, right on the border with Canada. The school has an amazing reputation, and your parents or probation officer have decided that this is the right place for you to go. If anybody can help you to get your life on track, this is the place that can do it for you.
It won't be easy. Your first week you'll be shadowed by a "Buddy" (a more experienced student in your group). You'll be watched like a hawk by your counselors. If you break the few rules of the school, you'll be punished harshly. All students do chores and everyone is expected to pick up after him or herself. You'll go on quests, hikes, mountain climbing, and you'll fall into bed exhausted every night. And even with all this activity, you're also going to be doing your normal schoolwork for your year!
Horizon is a place of growth. It is a place where your life will change. It is a place where you will change.
